Grammar Bridge

Tamil and Korean are both SOV languages with postpositions, verb-final sentences, and suffixes that carry tense and respect. Every sentence below shows the structural parallel word by word — matching colours mean matching roles.

Tenses — the same logic, different sounds

There are four main verb tenses: past, present, present progressive, and future. You already know all four from Tamil. Take the verb போ (go) in the first person:

  • Pastபோனேன்(ponen)
  • Presentபோகிறேன்(poren)
  • Present Progressiveபோய்க்கொண்டிருக்கிறேன்(poyttu kondu irukkiren)
  • Futureபோவேன்(poven)

You may have seen a verb conjugation chart like this in school. Here it is for five common Tamil verbs:

Korean doesn't change for gender or number

In Tamil, verb endings shift depending on who is speaking — male or female, singular or plural, human or non-human. Korean doesn't do any of that. 먹었어요 means "ate" regardless of whether the subject is he, she, they, I, or even a cat. One ending, every situation.

The -요 (yo) at the end is politeness

Every ending in the chart above finishes with -요 (yo) — this is the polite form, used with strangers, elders, or in any formal setting. With close friends you can simply drop 요:

가요
먹어요먹어
공부해요공부해
볼 거예요볼 거야
