Korean puts a connector on the end of the first verb. Choose the connector according to whether you want to add another action, show a contrast, or explain why someone is going somewhere.
| பொருள் | Korean ending | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Add another action | -고-go · and / and then | Remove 다 (da) and attach 고 (go): 먹다 → 먹고 (meokda → meokgo). |
| Show a contrast | -지만-jiman · but / although | Remove 다 (da) and attach 지만 (jiman): 비싸다 → 비싸지만 (bissada → bissajiman). |
| Give the purpose of going or coming | -(으)러-(eu)reo · in order to | Add 으러 (eureo) or 러 (reo) to the verb describing the purpose: use 으러 (eureo) after a consonant except ㄹ (l), and 러 (reo) after a vowel or ㄹ (l). Then place a movement verb such as 가다 (gada, ‘go’) or 오다 (oda, ‘come’) after it. |
தமிழ்ப் பாலம்
காலை உணவு சாப்பிட்டு பள்ளிக்குப் போகிறேன்.
kālai uṇavu cāppiṭṭu paḷḷikkup pōkiṟēṉ
கொரியமொழி
아침을 먹고 학교에 가요.
achimeul meokgo hakgyoe gayo
I eat breakfast and then go to school.
Both sentences link the first action to the next one. The endings are not interchangeable word for word, so learn the complete Korean pattern.
தமிழ்ப் பாலம்
விலை அதிகம், ஆனால் நல்லது.
vilai atikam, āṉāl nallatu
கொரியமொழி
비싸지만 좋아요.
bissajiman joayo
It is expensive, but it is good.
தமிழ்ப் பாலம்
காபி குடிக்க கஃபேவுக்குப் போகிறேன்.
kāpi kuṭikka kafēvukkup pōkiṟēṉ
கொரியமொழி
커피를 마시러 카페에 가요.
keopireul masireo kape-e gayo
I go to a café to drink coffee.
The underlined phrase gives the purpose. Korean then needs a movement verb such as 가요 (gayo, ‘go’).
Give a reason
Choose the reason ending by looking at what comes next. Use -아/어서 (-a/eoseo) for a natural cause or closely connected result. Use -(으)니까 (-(eu)nikka) when the reason supports a request, command or suggestion.
| Ending | When to use it | Worked forms |
|---|---|---|
| -아/어서-a/eoseo | A natural cause or a closely connected result. In this beginner pattern, do not use it before a request, command or suggestion. | 오다 → 와서 (oda → waseo) 먹다 → 먹어서 (meokda → meogeoseo) 하다 → 해서 (hada → haeseo) |
| -(으)니까-(eu)nikka | A reason that supports what the listener should or could do next. | Consonant except ㄹ (l): 으니까 (eunikka). Vowel: 니까 (nikka). With a ㄹ-ending stem, drop ㄹ and add 니까: 살다 → 사니까 (salda → sanikka). |
தமிழ்ப் பாலம்
மழை பெய்வதால் வீட்டில் இருக்கிறேன்.
maḻai peyvatāl vīṭṭil irukkiṟēṉ
கொரியமொழி
비가 와서 집에 있어요.
biga waseo jibe isseoyo
Because it is raining, I am at home.
Compare the complete Tamil cause phrase மழை பெய்வதால் (maḻai peyvatāl). -தால் (-tāl) is not a separate word by itself.
தமிழ்ப் பாலம்
மழை பெய்கிறபடியால் குடை பிடியுங்கள்.
maḻai peykiṟapaṭiyāl kuṭai piṭiyuṅkaḷ
கொரியமொழி
비가 오니까 우산을 쓰세요.
biga onikka usaneul sseuseyo
Because it is raining, please use an umbrella.
The second part is a request, so -(으)니까 (-(eu)nikka) fits this lesson’s pattern.
Say “if” or “while”
-(으)면 (-(eu)myeon) sets a condition: “if” or “when”. -(으)면서 (-(eu)myeonseo) joins two actions happening at the same time, normally with the same person or thing doing both actions.
| The stem ends in | If / when | While |
|---|---|---|
| A consonant except ㄹ (l) | 으면eumyeon | 으면서eumyeonseo |
| A vowel or ㄹ (l) | 면myeon | 면서myeonseo |
தமிழ்ப் பாலம்
நேரம் இருந்தால் தொடர்பு கொள்ளுங்கள்.
nēram iruntāl toṭarpu koḷḷuṅkaḷ
கொரியமொழி
시간이 있으면 연락하세요.
sigani isseumyeon yeollakhaseyo
If you have time, please contact me.
Tamil conditional forms give a useful meaning bridge, but they do not predict every Korean use of -(으)면 (-(eu)myeon).
தமிழ்ப் பாலம்
இசையைக் கேட்டுக்கொண்டே படிக்கிறேன்.
icaiyaik kēṭṭukkoṇṭē paṭikkiṟēṉ
கொரியமொழி
음악을 들으면서 공부해요.
eumageul deuleumyeonseo gongbuhaeyo
I study while listening to music.
The same person listens and studies. Use a different structure when the two clauses have different subjects.
Set up the situation
These endings give the listener some background before the main statement, request or question. Depending on the situation, English may use “and”, “so” or “but”; there is no single English word that always replaces them.
| Word type | What to add | உதாரணம் |
|---|---|---|
| Action verb | -는데-neunde | 오다 → 오는데oda → oneunde |
| Description with a consonant-ending stem | -은데-eunde | 작다 → 작은데jakda → jageunde |
| Description with a vowel-ending stem | -ㄴ데-nde | 바쁘다 → 바쁜데bappeuda → bappeunde |
தமிழ்ப் பாலம்
இப்போது பிஸியாக இருக்கிறேன், பிறகு பேசுவோம்.
ippōtu pisiyāka irukkiṟēṉ, piṟaku pēcuvōm
கொரியமொழி
지금 바쁜데 나중에 이야기해요.
jigeum bappeunde najunge iyagihaeyo
I’m busy right now, so let’s talk later.
The first part gives the situation that explains the suggestion to talk later.
தமிழ்ப் பாலம்
நான் வீட்டுக்குப் போகும்போது மழை பெய்தது.
nāṉ vīṭṭukkup pōkumpōtu maḻai peytatu
கொரியமொழி
집에 가는데 비가 왔어요.
jibe ganeunde biga wasseoyo
While I was going home, it rained.
Tamil -போது (-pōtu) is one natural way to express this background relationship. It is a meaning bridge, not an ending that always matches -는데 (-neunde).
